The present staff of the Department of Environmental Engineering used to work at the Department of Water Resources Engineering – College of Technology and The Renewable Energy Center - Can Tho University (1987). On May 4^th, 1999 the Center of Environmental Engineering and New Energy was established in decision 286 / QĐ- ĐHCT.TCCB.99 of Rector of Can Tho University, on the basis of merging the Department of Irrigation Engineering with New Energy Center. Center of Environmental engineering and New Energy, which belongs to College of Engineering Technology -Can Tho University, is a unit operating in the fields of teaching, researching, developing, and consulting on issues related to environment; planning, designing engineering, constructing and managing rural service projects and amphibious transport in the Mekong Delta; operating in material science and new energy; teaching, consulting and constructing GIS systems servicing in planning, managing urban areas, irrigation and environment.

     On May 25^th, 2005, Center of Environmental Engineering and New Energy was officially renamed Department of Environmental Engineering and Water Resources belonging to College of Engineering Technology.

     On January 21^st, 2008, Department of Environmental Engineering was established on the basis of dividing staff forces of College of the Environment and Natural Resources (Department of Environmental Engineering, Department of Environment & natural resources management) and partly merged into Department of Environmental Engineering (College of Engineering Technology).
